When is a holiday moved in Colombia?
In Colombia, some holidays are moved to the nearest Monday to create long weekends, thanks to Law 51 of 1983, also known as the Emiliani Law. This law was promoted by then-Senator Raimundo Emiliani Román with the aim of encouraging domestic tourism and providing workers with more time for rest and recreation.
According to the Emiliani Law, public holidays that fall on weekdays (except those with specific historical or religious significance) are moved to the following Monday to extend the weekend. For example, if a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, it is celebrated on the preceding Monday. If it falls on a Thursday, it is moved to the following Monday.
