Multiple countries accept the Colombian driver's license, either directly or with an International Driving Permit (IDP). Some of these include:

However, when traveling it is important to check current regulations, as policies are constantly changing due to new bilateral agreements.

What type of license do you need to drive abroad?

The type of international driving permit for use abroad generally falls into one of these categories:

a) Your Colombian driver's license: In some cases, the Colombian license level (A1, C1, C2 or C3) will be sufficient, especially in countries with bilateral agreements.

Please note… If your Colombian license is level C2 or C3 for driving public service transport, you must carry an international driving permit.

b) International Driving Permit (IDP): This document is an official translation of your national license and is widely accepted in many countries.

c) Local license: For extended stays, you may need to obtain a driver's license from the host country.

How can I drive as a Colombian tourist?

To drive in the country you are going to visit, you must meet certain requirements depending on whether or not there are bilateral agreements with Colombia.

In the case of Spain , Mexico , Peru , Korea , Chile , Portugal and Argentina , which are countries with bilateral agreements, you will need:

    • Valid Colombian driver's license: make sure your license does not expire during your trip.
    • Minimum age: You must be at least 18 years old to drive in Spain.
    • Car insurance: it is mandatory to have liability insurance for the vehicle you will be driving.

In the case of countries like the United States , France , and Germany that do not have a bilateral agreement, they require other documents such as:

    • Colombian driver's license.
    • International Driving Permit (IDP).
    • Identification documents (passport).
    • Car insurance.

Keep in mind that, as a tourist, you can drive for a maximum of six months or 185 days. After this period, you should consider obtaining a local license if you plan to stay longer.

Additionally, some countries may have extra requirements, such as carrying a reflective vest or an emergency triangle in your vehicle. Research the specific regulations of each country you plan to visit.

How to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) in 5 steps?

The PIC in Colombia is an international document that authorizes a Colombian citizen to drive a vehicle in any country in the world that does not have a bilateral agreement, and to obtain it:

  1. Visit an authorized office of the Automobile Club of Colombia.
  2. Present your valid Colombian driver's license and your national identity card.
  3. Bring a printed 3x4 photo with a blue or white background.
  4. Complete the application form.
  5. Pay the corresponding fee which for 2024 has a value of 365,000 COP which is around 90 USD.
  6.

This document will be delivered within 20 business days, can be issued even with unpaid traffic tickets, and is valid for one year. Remember… The PIC does not replace your national driver's license; therefore, both documents must be carried together during your trip.
